A familiar figure stands before his own reflection, but the question above him shifts the image into something more uncomfortable: “Who’s really loving it?”

Bright colours, nostalgia and humour sit against something much darker underneath. The smiling reflection becomes a mask — an image of happiness that may have little connection to what is happening behind it.

The work explores the distance between appearance and reality: the version of ourselves we present to the world, the roles we perform, and the private emotions that can exist behind an instantly recognisable smile.

Painted with loose, expressive brushwork and deliberately raw marks, the piece uses the familiarity of popular culture to ask a much more human question about identity, performance and mental health.
